Frogs in the well are unaware of the outside world. The only thing they can see is the sky. I was that frog in the well. I had a satiated life in South Korea. I had friends and family who I could trust. Therefore, I did not contemplate about studying abroad. However, when my parents gave me an opportunity to learn about new cultures, off I went to the United States.
In South Korea, most of the citizens are of the same race and there are only a few foreigners. I could not imagine how diverse the United States was before I came here since I lived most of my life in South Korea. Therefore, when I first stepped on the land of America I was so surprised that my eyes were on stalks. I could actually notice that the United States was a melting pot where a variety of cultures, races, and ethnicities assimilate into a cohesive whole. As I lived and studied in the United States, I learned how to embrace and how to understand a variety of cultural differences. I also learned that I greatly enjoy many cultures of the world. After some time in America I became a frog that leaped to the top of the well to view not only the sky, but the trees, flowers, mountains, and lakes that form the whole world where it can learn and accept new things.
When I was young I was a very timid and introvert child. However, after I came to America, the pride I had for myself grew because I was studying and watching the rapid changes of various cultures and generations. Currently, I believe many countries stand on the brink of a technological revolution: The Fourth Industrial Revolution. I hope to become a person who can lead the world to solve this assignment rather than become a person who just follows the change. My grandfather owns a ceramic company, ZEN, and for me he is an example of someone who was part of improving technology and being part of the world’s innovation. He accomplished the development of new technologies that improved the quality of the ceramics. He never gave up every time he failed and now his technologies are acknowledged by the global ceramic company called Lenox. My grandfather also increased the current brand value of ZEN through his strategic management and now ZEN exports ceramics to over twenty countries across the world. Just as my grandfather saw the need and prospect for the development of new technologies I see that right now and I want to be part of this revolution.
I came to America to become a person who can continue and protect the reputation of my grandfather’s ceramic company. Ceramics are everywhere in people’s lives and contain many different countries’ cultures and histories within the designs and shapes. I aim to study those cultures and histories that the ceramics contain, and I am very confident that those challenges and experiences I can gain from University will absolutely help me become a next powerful leader of ZEN. My cumulative goal is to advance my knowledge and experience in both Asian studies and business and then apply these in the professional arena working at an international company.
